The House of Representatives has announced an investigation into the alleged diversion of N20 billion by certain employees of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
Reports that during Thursday’s plenary, an ad-hoc committee was established for the probe, following the adoption of a motion put forward by Hafiz Ibrahim Kawu from Kano State.
The NNPC employees in question are accused of diverting over N20 billion by disguising the funds as consultancy fees paid to external consultants.
Kawu expressed regret that at a time when the government is actively combatting corruption and seeking to develop infrastructure, NNPC staff are allegedly diverting funds in this manner.
He stated that such an “unwholesome practice” has negative consequences for the country’s prosperity if not addressed.
