In a shocking incident on Saturday evening, Mr. Richard Idowu, a US-based Nigerian lecturer and Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, was fatally shot during the 50th coronation anniversary celebration in Ejigbo, Osun State.
Quest Times reports that the tragic event unfolded at a private residence linked to Prince Eniola Oyeyode, son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the shooting occurred after a meeting attended by key figures, including APC chieftain Mr. Ayodele Asalu and Mr. Timothy.
According to Afiz Lawal, a Personal Assistant to the deceased, the shooting happened as attendees dispersed.
“When we returned to Osun from Ogun State where Governor Adeleke took a Chieftaincy title, we moved to Ejigbo for 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin.
“Immediately after the coronation party, we were about to start coming to Osogbo when Prince Eniola, son of Ogiyan, told us to go to his house along Inisa Road in Ejigbo for a brief meeting. Those who attended the meeting include Hon. Asler (Ayodele Asalu) and one Hon Timothy, he said.
He mentioned that Prince Eniola allegedly instructed a local hunter to fire shots into the air, but tragically, the shot was directed towards the ground, hitting Mr. Idowu in the leg. Despite efforts to rush him to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Lawal expressed uncertainty about the nature of the incident, whether planned or accidental, as the alleged shooter was reportedly beaten to death, but this remains unconfirmed.
To this effect, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has promptly ordered an investigation into the incident.
The governor expressed condolences and urged law enforcement to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
