Uganda moves to secure labour export deal with Oman

The Ugandan government is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oman to expedite the export of labor between the two countries.

This comes after the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Esther Anyakun, visited Oman on Monday.

During the visit, Ms Anyakun met with Oman’s Minister of Labour, Mahad Said Ali Baawain, and the two discussed plans to open a new market for skilled and semi-skilled Ugandans.
The duo also agreed to prepare an MoU to expedite the labor migration process between the two countries.

Lawrence Egulu, commissioner in charge of employment services at the ministry, told Daily Monitor that the government is planning to expand the labor export market by signing favorable bilateral labor agreements with more countries so that more Ugandans can be employed. over there.
The countries are Oman, Somalia, Lebanon, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Earlier this month, Gender Minister Betty Amongi signed a bilateral labor agreement between Uganda and Qatar to facilitate safe migrant work.

Plans to formalize the labor outsourcing business to Oman began in July 2023 when Ingah Atamba Kutesa, Honorary Consul of the Sultanate of Oman in Uganda, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman.
