Three police officials in the North West have been arrested for receiving payment to issue vehicle clearance certificates for stolen vehicles.
An alert police official at Ramatlabama Port of Entry, led to the arrest of three police officials, Tshepiso Theresa Boikanyo (45), Keorapetse Aubrey Molefe (44) and Tshedimosetso Bridgette Nku (22) attached to the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) at Lehurutshe, North West.
They appeared in the Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, on charges of corruption and they were granted R500 bail each.
The next court appearance will be on Monday, 9 December 2024.
Their court appearance follows their apprehension earlier on the same day (Wednesday, 30 October 2024) by members of the SAPS Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.
It is alleged that the suspects received payment to issue vehicle clearance certificates for two stolen vehicles, a white Toyoya Hilux and a silver Volkswagen Polo.
When these vehicles were stopped at Ramatlabama Port of Entry (PoE), the alert police officer realised the vehicles were issued with SARPCCO clearances, but the vehicles had been tampered with.
The vehicles were seized and the incident reported to the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit, which resulted in the arrest of the trio.
The public is reminded that the issuing of SARPCCO clearance certificates for vehicles (needed when crossing borders) or other vehicle clearance certificates issued by the South African Police Service, and is a service rendered free of charge.
Anyone who had to pay for these services is requested to contact the Anti-Corruption Units.
