Sudan’s warring rivals have agreed to send representatives for negotiations, potentially in Saudi Arabia, the United Nations’ special representative in the country, according to Volker Perthes, the UN envoy.

The UN envoy added that talks would focus on establishing a “stable and reliable” ceasefire monitored by national and international observers.

The two sides are believed to have named their representatives for preliminary discussions while the logistics for talks were still being worked out.

The UN officer noted the change in the tone of the two warring sides as a realisation of how dangerous the situation had become and that any victory would be won at “too great a cost”.

It not yet known when the negotiations as the UN official said both sides would have to agree on the venue.

The two sides clashed in the capital, Khartoum, despite another three-day extension of a fragile ceasefire with explosions and sounds of gunfire still been reported on Monday
