Summary

The pulmonologist - Pulmonary critical care - internal medicine critical care certified specialist will provide the full scope of critical care medicine. Inpatient critical care consults - conducting medical ICU daily multidisciplinary rounds - medical ICU procedures including but not limited to central line placement - arterial line placement - dialysis catheter placement - chest tube placement - intubation and bedside bronchoscopy.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Additional Requirement: Preferred Experience: Applicants must possess clinical and research interest or experience sufficient to qualify for a faculty appointment at Saint Louis University or Washington University School of Medicine

  • The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 10 lbs. - sitting (4 hours) - standing (2 hours) - walking (2 hours) - bending/stooping (1 hour) - twisting (1/2 hour) - simple grasping (4 hours) - fine manipulation (6 hours) - reaching above the shoulder (1/2 hour) - and operating machinery (1/2 hour).

Duties

  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary procedures and point-of-care ultrasound
  • Medical ICU attending duties include rounding on a closed MICU unit patient ward - working with other teams members such as mid-level provider with the potential for teaching house staff
  • Responding promptly to ER or ward patient consultations and ER or ward admissions\\transfers to the medical ICU - as well management of a variety of ICU emergencies during your tour of duty
  • Tour of duty will be assigned in conjunction with fellow medical ICU providers in order to achieve 24 /7 in-house MICU coverage
  • The expectation is for 80 hours every 2 weeks
  • Incumbent will be a member of Pulmonary and Critical Care Section/Medical Service and will participate in patient care - teaching - research and administrative activities of the Section - as assigned
  • - Interviews - examines - selects diagnostic testing appropriately - and interprets/collates results to coordinate patient care
  • - Communicates and documents with clarity to patients and medical personnel to coordinate patient care
  • - Midlevel supervision within Pulmonary section
  • - Procedural skills may include arterial puncture - EKG interpretation - arthrocentesis - abdominal paracentesis - venipuncture - nasogastric tube insertion - PFT interpretation - moderate sedation - lumbar puncture - thoracentesis - intra-arterial line & central venous line placement - Swan-Ganz catheter insertion - FOB with routine procedures - FOB with transbronchial biopsy/aspiration - chest tube insertion and fluoroscopy equipment usage
  • - Shares after hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation
  • - Current BLS required /ACLS desirable but can be obtained upon hire
  • - Participate in the educational programs for section personnel as well as the medical staff
  • - Participate in monitoring the quality - safety and appropriateness of patient care - both at the Section and facility level
  • - Attend Pulmonary team meetings
  • - Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization
  • - Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews
  • - Complete medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.- Attend Medicine Service monthly staff meetings and COS quarterly meetings as per bylaws
