The Reference and Outreach Librarian is part of the Information Services Section, providing in person and virtual reference to the public and employees of the State of California. This position creates engaging programming and works with people from all over the state to inform about State Library resources and encourage their use.

Who May Apply

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (please attach your letter, if available). SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Statement of Qualifications:

Describe your knowledge, experience, and or skills in the following areas, in order:

1. An MSLIS/MLIS or equivalent degree
2. Customer service experience in public or private sectors (including reference service)
3. Experience performing duties at the Librarian level
4. Experience with database evaluation, acquisition, deselection, and the electronic resources lifecycle
5. Knowledge of or experience with database instruction and use
6. Experience in project planning and management
7. Knowledge of or experience with evaluating library materials
8. Familiarity with reference interviewing techniques and/or standard search strategies
9. Working knowledge of integrated library systems, ideally Ex Libris’ Alma
