UN Agencies Call for Urgent Global Action as Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Four United Nations agencies; the IOM, UNHCR, UNICEF, and WFP have jointly appealed for immediate international action to address Sudan’s worsening humanitarian catastrophe.
After more than 900 days of conflict, millions are facing famine, disease, and displacement as essential services collapse. Over 30 million people now require humanitarian aid, including 9.6 million internally displaced people and nearly 15 million children.
Despite the return of over one million people to Khartoum this year, most are returning to destroyed homes and non-functioning services. Across Darfur, Kordofan, and other regions, families are trapped without food, water, or healthcare, while malnutrition, cholera, and malaria spread unchecked.
UN officials who recently visited Sudan described scenes of devastation and resilience. “Families are determined to rebuild, but life remains incredibly fragile,” said Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General. UNICEF’s Ted Chaiban warned that “children are malnourished, exposed to violence, and dying from preventable diseases.”
The crisis is compounded by severe funding shortages. The 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan, seeking US$4.2 billion, is only 25% funded, threatening life-saving operations.

Despite immense challenges, humanitarian teams have reached 13.5 million people this year, but agencies warn that without increased global support, millions more remain at risk. “The world must step up,” the agencies said in a joint statement.
