Lenacapavir, New HIV Prevention Injection, Set for 2026 Rollout Amid Funding Challenges

Uganda will hold presidential elections on January 15, pitting long-time leader Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, against opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine. Museveni is campaigning on economic development, particularly oil projects led by TotalEnergies and CNOOC, including a refinery and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline linking Uganda to Tanzania. With most Ugandans under 30, youth unemployment remains a key concern.
The opposition questions whether oil revenues will benefit citizens and has vowed to review existing contracts. Meanwhile, the campaign has been overshadowed by accusations of repression: hundreds of opposition supporters have reportedly been arrested, echoing the violence and mass detentions seen during the 2021 elections.
The UN has condemned the crackdown, and fears persist that internet access could be restricted during voting.
