US President Donald Trump has sparked backlash after claiming that Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota should be jailed or deported to Somalia. In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump accused Omar of being involved in large-scale fraud in Minnesota and described her as unpatriotic, suggesting she could be sent back to Somalia to “help make Somalia great again.”
Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has represented Minnesota in the House of Representatives since 2019. Trump’s remarks also targeted Minnesota’s political leadership, accusing state officials of shielding criminal activity and opposing immigration enforcement. He further alleged, without evidence, widespread fraud linked to Somali communities in the state.
The comments come amid heightened political tensions over immigration, law enforcement actions, and recent protests in Minnesota. Omar has also recently faced criticism from Republican lawmakers for controversial language about the United States, prompting renewed partisan debate over patriotism, free speech, and political accountability.
