The Nigerian Presidency has warned activist and politician Omoyele Sowore against leading a planned protest in Abuja demanding the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), announced that the rally tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow would take place on October 20, describing it as a “historic” march to pressure the government into freeing Kanu.

Reacting on X, Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga accused Sowore of attempting to incite unrest under the guise of activism. He said Kanu is facing trial for treason and warned that street protests over judicial matters threaten public order.

Onanuga also criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for supporting the protest, calling his stance “reckless and unbecoming of a statesman.” He maintained that justice for Kanu would come through legal channels, not street demonstrations.

Despite the warning, Sowore has insisted that the protest will go ahead as planned.
