Ambassadorial Appointment of Former INEC Chair, Sparks Debate on Electoral Integrity

Thirty countries and the European Commission have issued a joint statement demanding an immediate halt to fighting in Sudan, condemning ongoing attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure in Darfur and Kordofan.
The statement, signed by 24 EU member states along with Canada, Norway, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Switzerland, and European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and allied militias to cease hostilities immediately.
Signatories strongly condemned violence against civilians, particularly women and children, warning that violations of international humanitarian law may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity. They urged prompt and impartial investigations to ensure accountability.
According to the UN human rights office, at least 57 civilians were killed between February 15 and 16 across four states. Reported incidents include a drone strike on Al Safiya market in North Kordofan that killed 28 people and another strike on a displacement camp in West Kordofan that left 26 dead, including 15 children.
