Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga now says that the planned Tuesday protests will go on despite an assassination plot against him.

According to the opposition leader, the assassination plot is being orchestrated by senior officials of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Raila insisted that they will not be cowed.

“If the regime choses to turn our peaceful and constitutional activities into a showdown and assassination that Mr. Kuria and Mr. Gachagua are threatening, so be it, we are ready,” he said in a letter seen by the Star.

The Azimio protests are scheduled to take place on May 2.

The Azimio leader was responding to a statement by the police banning the protests.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei, in a letter, said while the Constitution allows every citizen to peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities, that right is not absolute.

He said the last protests were marred with violence with demonstrators turning up while armed hence the decision to ban it.

“Previous demonstrations were marred with violence as the demonstrators were armed with machetes, who attacked innocent members of the public who were going about their business resulting in the destruction of property, attacks on members of the general public,” Bungei said in a press conference Sunday.

On Saturday, President William Ruto swore that he will use his powers to stop their planned protests.

Ruto said he was ready to use his power and full force to ensure the life and property of all Kenyans is protected.
